Split Reason

April 18, 2005

We have a new ad running for Split Reason, a site that just happens to make some really badass shirts. I would really really appreciate it if we could show them why it is a good idea to advertise with us. There is an ad to the side and one in the forum rotation. I highly encourage you guys to at least give their site a look.

Sometime today it was announced that EB and Gamestop were going to merge…. I am not even sure what to think about that right now.

The EB press release is located here and the Gamestop one is here if the page loads for you.

EB Crew, had you already heard about this?

Polarium

April 18, 2005

Polarium, the newest addition to the expanding lineup of puzzlers for the DS, is really three games in one. It is a falling block game, but without the infinite addictiveness of Tetris. It’s also a short but devious set of mind-bending puzzles. Finally, it’s a multiplayer game that can only exist on the DS. Individually each of these is fun, but do they join together to form a cohesive game worth paying full price for?Polarium‘s core design is as basic as games get. Arrayed on the screen is a grid of square tiles, each either white or black. Drawing a line across tiles with the stylus selects them, and tapping again on the last highlighted tile makes all of the selected tiles reverse color. Turning a horizontal row to a solid color, either black or white, makes that line disappear. Though it may be possible to clear a screen by tapping on individual tiles a few at a time, the true feeling of grace and accomplishment is only achieved when one looping, twisting line is able to clear the entire screen.

That synopsis describes the bulk of gameplay, including the entire puzzle mode. Puzzle mode is the most intriguing section of the game. One hundred patterns of black and white tiles await challengers, most with a single elegant way to drag the stylus through and complete the round. For those who enjoy banging their heads against difficult challenges, there is little better in life than these arrays of little squares. The rest of us will enjoy the available mental crutches, including hints on every puzzle and a replay of the last failed attempt.

Unfortunately, diligent players will exhaust the 100 static puzzles far too quickly. That leaves the challenge mode, with its blistering difficulty and unrelenting rain of tiles. Challenges in this mode begin with a simple array of tiles to be cleared from the screen. As soon as those are out of the way, another few layers of tiles fall from the top of the screens, then another and anotherA

Yoshi’s Touch & Go

April 14, 2005

I know I am late to the party on this one but we got Yoshi’s Touch & Go as well as Donkey Kong Jungle Beat yesterday and while I can’t talk about Jungle Beat I can tell you that Touch & Go is the best game on the DS as far as I am concerned. It is a little shallow, but man is it fun. More on that when the review is posted.

I also want to make you guys aware of something that is in a very infantile stage. Many of you are aware of Penny Arcade’s Childs Play and how successful it has been. Since we emphasize community and all that jazz we have really wanted to help out in some way but I wasn’t sure that Childs Play was the right place for our effort so we are going to organize a video game and toy drive local to San Antonio. Of course, anyone is welcome to donate and participate but all proceeds are going to benefit the Methodist Children’s Hospital.

I have already spoken to them and I have a general list of needs that they have. When the topic of video games came up the woman I was speaking with got very excited at the thought of new systems and games. I have a feeling this could be very cool and I want to get as many people onboard as I can.

If you know someone interested in donation supplies, money, or items to help us get this rolling I would be glad to talk to you. We are going to need donation boxes/stations and probably a lot of other stuff we haven’t thought of yet.

I will keep you all posted as this unfolds. We are aiming for a summer launch and drive so we don’t conflict with the Christmas toy drives that are run in San Antonio every year.
