Officials from Vivendi Games subsidiary Sierra have announced plans for a third game in the long running Empire Earth RTS series for the PC. In development by Mad Doc Software, Empire Earth III will be available on PC this fall, and as expected will let players build and rule an empire from the ancient world to the distant future. The game will also offer the unique ability to keep units from one battle to the next rather than starting players with a new garrison of units with each new scenario.

“The Empire Earth series has been the recipient of much deserved praise from the media and fans alike, making it a multi-million unit selling franchise for Sierra Entertainment,” said Cindy Cook, chief strategy and marketing officer for Vivendi Games. “Empire Earth III will take the series to the next level with its ability to capture the entire scope of the globe and give it to the hands of the player.”

Microsoft and developer The Behemoth have confirmed that after much waiting (and complaining to our mothers), Alien Hominid HD will hit Xbox Live Arcade on Wednesday, February 28.

The game, which first appeared on PlayStation 2 and GameCube in 2004 and later for the Xbox in 2005, is an old school side scroller that stars a “feisty yet adorable alien” who fends off FBI agents over sixteen levels and seven mini-games. The game also features both single and multiplayer gamelpay, complete with unique hand-drawn animation.

Certainly, for 800 Microsoft Points, Alien Hominid HD offers a lot of content.

This year’s New York Comic Con had nearly double the floor space of last year’s inaugural event, but that didn’t stop the Jacob Javits Center from being overwhelmed with throngs of geeks, fanboys (and girls) and cosplayers this weekend. The staff at the convention center was more than prepared for the crowd this year, so everything ran smoothly. Unless you count the combination of a four block line and bitter cold.

Gaming had a huge presence at the Con, from the massive Darkness and TMNT: The Movie kiosks to the Sony booth, crammed with gamers crowding around the PS3 stations. The opposite could be said about the PSP booths, as tumbleweeds rolled past the handheld stations throughout the day weekend’s festivities.

Some upcoming games on display were Bullet Witch, Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia, Warhammer Online, Lord of the Rings Online, and the Xbox 360 build of Guitar Hero II, but the oddity of the show may have been Freestyle Street Basketball, a massively multiplayer online…street basketball game, complete with levels, classes, and special moves.

The biggest surprise of the show, game-wise, was definitely Pirates of the Burning Sea. Flying Lab’s small booth was packed with fans and onlookers all day long, both Friday and Saturday. I had the opportunity to sit down with the developers, talk about the game, and spend a healthy amount of time with a beta build of the summer MMO. A full preview of the game will be coming this week, so keep checking Snackbar Games for updates.

I also got to watch some Atari reps play an early build of Godzilla: Unleashed for the Wii. If the idea of aiming a kaiju monster’s breath weapon with the Wii remote appeals to you, you’re in luck, but you’re going to have to wait awhile for its projected Q4 release.

Elsewhere, there were plenty of board and card games on display, too. In next week’s Gaming Unplugged, we’ll have an interview with Tenacious Games about their CCG The Spoils and its upcoming 1st Edition, Part Two set.

WizKids’ booth was aflutter with Clix games, but I did manage to sneak in and get a look at a prototype of Master Chief, who’s featured in WK’s upcoming Halo 3 ActionClix game. I couldn’t snap any photos at Bungie’s request, but we’re going to be talking about the game with them soon.

More Halo news? Of course! Marvel Comics announced that A-list creators Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev would be launching an ongoing Halo comic series this summer.

Altogether, the floor was still dominated by comics (and people dressed as stormtroopers), but there was a huge gaming presence in New York this year, and it’s only going to grow as the event goes forward. Look for other features and coverage from the weekend’s event in the days ahead.

Medal of Honor: Airborne will be released soon for the PlayStation 2, but in case you missed the last few series entries for the console, three to be precise, Electronic Arts thought of you as well with Medal of Honor Collection. Heading to retail on March 6, the collection will include Medal of Honor: Frontline, Rising Sun and European Assault as a single compilation for $29.95.

Activision, among many other studios, now have licensed Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 for an yet unannounced action game for unspecified platforms. As of now, it is unknown what the studio is going to be building using the popular technology, which has been used by such studios as Atari, Midway, Silicon Knights, as well as drives Epic’s very own flagship Xbox 360 powerhouse Gears Of War.

Addressing the deal, Activison’s head of production Laird Malamed commented: “The Unreal Engine is one of the most technically advanced engines on the market and is a perfect fit for our upcoming action game…The engine’s robust suite of programming tools will enable our development team to deliver what is sure to be an amazing game experience.”

Epic Games’ vice president Mark Rein added: “We’ve admired them for a long time and we’re pleased that they’ve chosen to use Unreal Engine 3 and we’re confident they’re going to make a great game with it.”
