May 2007

OK, as I have stated in the past, Nintendo likes to have fun when they mail stuff out out the press. I have cited many examples before (chocolate Donkey Kong coins, hamster food on a stick), but today’s arrival ranks among the top WTF moments we’ve had when opening boxes sent from our friends in Redmond.

Today a smallish box showed up containing a healthy slew of green and white confetti (seriously, does Nintendo get a discount on this stuff?), with a plastic cup hidden inside. The cup was branded with the Wendy’s fast food chain’s logo, with a link to http://www.frostyfloat.com/.

Not much other info was included, save for a scroll of paper saying more information is coming on May 21. Similarly, the website linked there is counting down to that date as well. So, I presume there is going to be some sort of Wii giveaway, so you can work off those triple patty cheeseburgers.

I’m hungry. Thankfully the cup contained a coupon for a free frosty. I’m on my way!

The issue surrounding owners of Crackdown being able to grab the Halo 3 Beta has now been resolved. Microsoft issued a software patch to fix the problems at 7pm PDT tonight. Due to the delay, Microsoft is extending the beta period an extra 4 days. The beta now ends on June 10th at 11:59pm PDT.

Happy Halo-ing.

Previously carrying the working title of Project Treasure Island Z, Capcom released the final name of their first original Wii title; Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure.

Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure is an innovative, full-length puzzle adventure game that intends to fully utilize the unique control mechanics of the Wii. Playing as Zack, you stumble upon the cursed skull of Barbaros, a pirate whose treasures are hidden on an unknown island, who promises to reveal the treasure in exchange for lifting the curse. You will explore wondrous environments and stages and solving puzzles in an attempt to unearth the buried riches and become the greatest pirate in the world.

No release date has been set so far, but Capcom hopes to release Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure this fall.

This evening, Microsoft quietly announced the official release date for Halo 3. That date is currently set as Sept 25th, 2007 for the US with Europe seeing the game a day later on the 26th.

Peter Moore, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, said “On September 25, we intend to deliver a finale that will go down in entertainment history and leave people around the world with an experience that will be shared and enjoyed for years to come.”

We can only hope that Halo 3 delivers the type of experience that Microsoft is claiming. Now the waiting begins and the speculation between beta and final release gets into full swing.

Halo 3 MP EventWhen a game has 4 million preorders before the press even sees a running beta, the gaming press is downgraded to spectator status. Last Friday night’s Halo 3 preview event in San Francisco was a veritable who’s-who of gaming journalists – even the louder-than-life Editor-in-Chief of PC Gamer, Greg Vederman dropped by to see his console cousins’ prodigy at play.

We weren’t disappointed. Microsoft simply let us loose on the three new multiplayer maps and we entered the online Rumble Pit, where some very seasoned veterans lay in wait for the impotent press to drop into their online abattoir.

It’s not difficult to sense how differently Microsoft is treating the media concerning Halo 3. Simply put, it was obvious that they didn’t really care. Despite the fact that Halo is Microsoft’s baby – its system seller – there was to be no hand-holding; no controlled play sessions that Microsoft’s spin masters at Edelman PR are famous for. The train has already left the building, and the Halo juggernaut shall be deemed a commercial success before a critical gaze ever falls upon it.

Halo 3 MP EventLast year, developer Bungie unveiled an amazing Halo 3 trailer at E3 that set an impossibly high hurdle – but one that seemed justified after they claimed the excruciatingly high-definition preview was created A
