Rumors of price drops, new mobos, and cooler chips continue to pop up in reference to the Xbox 360. It appears that they make actually be true this time. San Jose Mercury News’ Dean Takahashi is reporting that Microsoft is primed with a 65nm chipset codenamed Falcon. The original Xbox 360 was built on a 90nm chipset and Falcon should help lower costs while also helping out with the Xbox 360’s heat issues.
Falcon is made up of an IBM microprocessor and an AMD/ATI graphics chip that essentially are smaller versions of their predecessors. Takahashi suggests that Microsoft is in the final stages of testing the new Falcon chipset and should have them ready for launch this fall.
I for one would welcome a cooler, smaller Xbox 360 maybe in a slightly smaller shell and possibly with HD-DVD internally. Oh wait, this is not my wish list is it….
UK webzine Way of the Rodent’s own Rocky Howard has put his thumbs on the chopping blocks, announcing a personal mission to play, in order, all 4000 classic arcade games listed in Twin Galaxies’ official book of High Scores.
You sir, are my juke box hero.
You can keep up with his progress at the So, You want to be an Arcade Champion? website. So far he’s four weeks and thirteen games in, a rate of progress that should see him finish sometime around Christmas 2030.
But why undertake this task? Says Howard, “A bunch of us recently took a bit of a pilgrimage to the Classic Arcade Tournament over at Funspot in Americaland. I met a whole bunch of World Champions at the event and it got me wanting to make England proud and to bag one of them records for old Blighty.”
“Handily, Walter Day, keeper of the arcade scores at Twin Galaxies, had just released the latest set of records in a big-old book and as I flicked through the pages two things happened: my childhood memories of seedy, brilliant, East End arcades came flooding back, and I realised that there were a few scores in there I could probably beat,” he added.
And that, folks, is just what Rocky has set out to do…
Oblivion, that little niche title from Bethesda, looks to be getting the Game of the Year treatment this year. Bethesda announced this morning that they would be releasing a Game of the Year Edition of the popular RPG for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this September.
The GotY edition is slated to include the original version of Oblivion along with the Shivering Isles expansion and the Knights of the Nine content.
If you skipped over Oblivion when it was released, then this is probably your best chance to grab all the available content in one place. Bethesda hasn’t released any pricing info on this version of the game, but I would expect to see it priced slightly lower than the average full price of games on each respective platform.
