Hey everybody! Mario Kart!
Let’s be honest: there are those who are excited just by us saying that, and there are those who are just totally burned out on the series as a whole. Mario Kart 3DS isn’t going to change that, but it does add some things that modify the formula a bit.
Worker-placement is a common mechanic in modern boardgaming, but Tory Niemann’s Alien Frontiers (published in the US by Clever Mojo Games following a successful Kickstarter campaign) adds a seldom-seen twist in that the “workers” you place are rolled dice. Normally I’m not a fan of any game where dice can interfere with my strategy, but Alien Frontiers has a few other features that keep the randomness from detracting from the fun.
As you walk outside, you see a bright, cloudless sky that stretches from peak to peak. The snowy mountains cutting short the endless vista you would otherwise be able to look out upon. Ascending the nearest mountain, you are attacked by bandits, whom you quickly dispatch with fireballs and arrows. Climbing higher still, you hear a loud roar as you come across a clearing with a large stone building in it. Alighted atop the topmost tower is a dragon. It sees you and swoops down to attack. Welcome to Skyrim.
