Alice: Madness Returns is a sequel nobody could have seen coming, especially eleven years after the release of the original. American McGee’s Alice was a cult hit and garnered a lot of attention for designer American McGee, featuring a darker, more sinister version of Lewis Carroll’s classic book. Following the events of the first game, Madness Returns focuses on Alice as a teenager, recovering from her traumatic past. READ MORE
This week, we’re looking at a game that heavily borrows from Advance Wars and a more turn-based RPG approach to tower defense.
DOFUS Battles (iPhone, iPad): Online games DOFUS and Wakfu have their fans, and largely don’t have much of a following from the mainstream. Projects like this game and the Wakfu XBLA title are attempts to change that, giving players a taste of the experience without the daunting multiplayer arena that is the main experience. As a standalone product, this one’s interesting: it’s tower defense, but instead of towers, you have specific units with classes like archers and healers. We like the completely turn-based aspect: between waves, things stop and you can spend whatever you’d like, and it doesn’t rely on placement while enemies are rushing in. (That isn’t so bad, really, but there are enough games out there to cater to those who prefer it.) READ MORE
This week, we look at a port of iOS/Mac mainstay Cro-Mag Rally and an in-house Microsoft title.
Cro-Mag Rally: Kart racers have seen their fair share of ups and downs, from the great Mario Kart 64 to the not-so-much Madagascar Kartz. Cro-Mag Rally first launched in 2008 on the iPhone (though it was a Mac game before that), and honestly, not much has changed. The tilt controls are the same, and the graphics and textures still don’t look right. There is a learning curve, and those prone to dizziness should stay away as the steering can get out of control.
