In the My Favorite Game series, get to know us better as staff writers share the game they love most and why.

Grueling simulations of railroad operations and complex, thoughtful board games of the hardest kind and the always-challenging Civilization but also OutRun, Beatmania and half a dozen classic shooters, it seems my favorite games couldn’t be more any more different! My taste was so polarized I couldn’t be content with a middle ground; it always had to be one or another, and it was always painful to choose.

As brutal and terrifying as it is in real life, war can make for a compelling backdrop for stories, both real and fictitious. The desperation of the situation, emerging technological advances and influences of bigger-than-life personalities are greatly appealing to historians and enthusiasts (rarely the participants). The optimistic future of Star Trek steps aside during the Dominion War storyline in Deep Space Nine; many fans would say it was for the better. “Yesterday’s Enterprise” is considered one of the best Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes, taking place in an alternate reality smack dab in the middle of a war between the Klingons and Federation.

Countless movies have received great accolades for depicting the ultimate conflict of man, from Bridge on the River Kwai to Saving Private Ryan to The Hurt Locker. The themes, emotions and complexities that a war brings will not stop being adapted into movies, games, books, television, plays, poetry and paintings because the source material is simply too rich. We have a bit of a loot problem.

It’s hard to admit it, I know, but if you think about how often games implement a loot system and how frequently players take to hoarding piles of the stuff, you’ll realize it’s true. I’m definitely one of those people. It is easy for us to become obsessed with collecting things in games, not just loot-driven games, so it’s clear why loot is so prominent in some of the year’s biggest releases. This is not the loot problem I am referring to though. This problem stems from games that give you too much and, as a result, potentially ruin an otherwise-good experience. READ MORE

In general, it is hard to recommend a new entry in an annual sports series to people who don’t always get them anyway. This year, while FIFA Soccer 13 is largely the same, the new additions go a long way toward being able to do that. READ MORE
