Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is strange; there’s no getting around that. It’s a game that takes place in a world called Gamindustri where there are goddesses that correlate to each of the big three current video game consoles, and these goddesses look and act like anime teenagers. That’s usually a downside for me, but Victory admits its decision was a conscious one, owns it, and is able to use the visual style in concert with the writing to deliver some genuine laughs. And regardless of veneer, the reason that I play JRPGs is present in full force here: the battle system is fantastic. READ MORE
I like golf. It’s a sport that virtually anybody can become good at, and the camaraderie that comes from walking with friends for a few hours while competing for longest short and best hole every weekend is one of my favorite childhood memories. And that’s why computer and console golf has always held a special place for me: not only is it the rare sports game that I understand, but the attached nostalgia makes every round a fun one. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 is the most complete golf game I’ve ever played. Nano Assault EX is an enhanced port of the 2012 3DS game, Nano Assault. Like the original, EX is a good-looking game, and everything that worked last year continues to work now. The nanite ship feels extremely responsive, the varied stages make for a fun campaign, and the boss fights are a standout. READ MORE
Bit.Trip Runner is a throwback to rhythm games of yesterday. In today’s world of plastic guitars and drum kits, Runner used the music as a gameplay element rather than a goal unto itself. It started by realizing that player actions enhanced the soundtrack, and it culminated in playing a new level just as much by ear as by eye. Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien continues that tradition, and improves upon its predecessor in every way. READ MORE
Toki Tori is exactly what everybody needs sometimes: a game to relax with that isn’t insultingly easy. Toki Tori moved as quickly or as slowly as the player wanted, it was beautiful to look at, and each level presented a challenge without feeling stressful. Toki Tori 2 changes the formula from the first game but, so far, retains the charm of the original. READ MORE
