There’s nothing like a new title from Platinum Games to make me feel like the least skilled gamer of all time and love every minute of my deserved trouncings.
Anarchy Reigns is a busy, busy game. It invokes cult classics such as MadWorld, Bayonetta and even a little God Hand. It strives to take the familiar hardcore Japanese brawler, douse it with online multiplayer and ignite it with as much chaos as possible. Anarchy, indeed. READ MORE
I spent the vast majority of 2012 with my face glued to my gorgeous new Vita, mostly playing PSP games and PSOne Classics, but I managed to get a hold of enough current games to put together a list of my favorites. At times I feel as if I am still reeling from the greatness of 2011, but this year definitely packed a punch in its own right.
This one was almost a surprise, but WayForward was behind it, so I knew I was in for a good time from the start. An energetic soundtrack, fantastic sprite artwork and animation and the signature Adventure Time style and humor, all built around a hilarious homage to Zelda II of all things, make for one of the better licensed platformers I’ve ever played. Black Knight Sword is the latest affront to convention from Grasshopper Manufacture, and is the developer’s second collaboration with Digital Reality (the first being Sine Mora). Black Knight is a downloadable title, offering to show what Goichi Suda (Suda 51) and his cohorts can do when not struggling against budget restrictions while trying to achieve AAA status. READ MORE

Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! is developer WayForward’s latest effort in their increasingly successful attempt to take over the world, one awesome licensed game at a time. Based on the wildly-successful, demographic-transcending Cartoon Network show, Adventure Time is a short, simple trek through an endearingly strange world that strikingly pays tribute to… Zelda II, of all things. While games derivative of Nintendo’s unfathomably-successful Super Smash Bros. are nothing new (though largely Japan-exclusive; shoutouts to Dream Mix TV World Fighters and Battle Stadium D.O.N.), PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is the first time a major developer has stepped up to the plate in an attempt to deliver some serious Street Fighter II/Fatal Fury-level competition to the legendary party brawler.
