XIII

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/xiii/cover.jpg[/floatleft]Ubi Soft has done it again. It ceases to amaze me that Ubi Soft has added yet another groundbreaking video game to their Hall of Fame. With the making of Splinter Cell it was a graphics breakthrough that most could not comprehend. Many people said that it could not be topped by any game in the near future and boy were they wrong. Ubi Soft continues to craft games with elegance and creativity that no other developer can compete with. XIII is one of those games that will stand above the rest with a new style of graphics, the cell shaded beauty. Being an FPS fan that I am, it was a given for me to try out XIII. But what reeled me into the essence of this game was the colorful and old school comic book style of the game. Unfortunately, all games have their flaws and this one is no exception.

As the story goes, The President of the United States has been assassinated, and you wake up wounded with a real bad case of amnesia. The only clues to your identity are the number XIII tattooed on you and a key. All of sudden you are accused of assassinating the President and are out to find out who you are and to prove your innocence. The games story really reminds of a mix of a couple of films. A little bit of Bourne Identity mixed with a bit of JFK, with a hint of In the Line of Fire. For the most part I found the story to be quite unique with the conspiracy twist to it. The people you must investigate are the same people you are running from. A killer named Mongoose is also among many who are after you, and until you are dead he will not stop. If you’re thinking to yourself that there are no allies, don’t fret. You are guided by a fellow operative, Jones, and General Carrington. You will be given instructions, hints, guides, weapons and many other important clues that will aide your missions. Along the way your memory will slowly come back as you see familiar places, faces, and voices.

When playing FPS games on PC, it is imperative to customize your keyboard and mouse to the proper commands to achieve maximum performance during gameplay. In my case changing weapons must be very accessible and action buttons must have smooth transitions. XIII gives you the option to customize your controls to your specific needs. Therefore I had no problems with controls during gameplay. The speed rate of FPS games is also something that is extremely important. XIII speed is just right, not fast and not to slow.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/xiii/ss03_thumb.jpg[/floatright]Remember the old Batman episodes when Batman and Robin were in heated battles, and every time they would punch someone this huge flash with big bold letters would fill the screen saying BOOM, CRASH, BAAM, etc? Well XIII provides that effect when shooting or blowing something up. The good thing is it doesn’t fill your screen, but there are some cool cutaway effects when you snipe your enemy from far away. Cut scenes were executed in a comic book fashion along with dialogue and external sounds. For example, when hiding behind a wall, you can hear and see the taps of your enemy’s footsteps. This gives you an advantage when striking at the precise moment. XIII also provides interactive environments, which mean you can use chairs, bottles, shovels, and pretty much anything you can get your hands on to take the enemy out. I would have to say the graphics in this game is one of a kind. The cell shaded aspect brings the new look for gaming to a whole new level.

The soundtrack to XIII is also very unique in itself. With a retro, “Shaft” groove, I thought it to fit perfectly with feel of the game. Also all the sound effects of the weapons, environments, and voice overs were very well recorded. Speaking of which, Adam West, the original Batman, was used for the voice over of General Carrington in XIII.

It is unfortunate that XIII did not have a solid single player mode, and I am not talking about the storyline either. I’m talking about the redundancy of the missions. After about four levels, it was pretty much the same thing over and over again. It was dull to see that there was no stealth involved and no real objectives except shooting your way through a level. The redeeming aspect is that the multiplayer is loads of fun in XIII, there are several different modes you can choose from. Sabotage gives players from each team a specific skill and they must execute it in the time allotted. Then there is your classic deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag. If you want to play on your own you can play the bot challenge, and set the bots to a certain difficulty.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/xiii/ss06_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]XIII is spectacular graphically, but is an average shoot’em up game when it comes to the single player campaign. If you enjoy playing online, then I most definitely encourage you to buy this game. XIII gives the gamer a quick dose of a good shooter, then fails to finalize with a solid ending. Overall XIII is a game that can definitely be worth waiting for, and it’s not a game that would be top five on your Christmas list.

Death from above!!

December 24, 2003

Yes folks, the Battlefield Vietnam site is finally up and running and it looks sweet. The screenshots look so awesome with helicopters, tanks and all new weapons. I’m totally diggin the site and the all new content. Make sure you guys stop by and check out the BF Vietnamsite. Some other content has been uploaded for you Counter-Strike Xbox fans. Two new maps are now ready for download from Xbox live, the new maps are Inferno which is a demolition map, and Office which is a hostage rescue map.

Seems that IO Interactive can’t get enough of releasing new sequels to their crappy game “Hitman”. “Hitman: Contract should be due out for the Spring of ’04. Well it’s Christmas Eve and we here at Snackbar wish all of you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/rotk/cover.jpg[/floatleft]As a fan of the Lord of the Rings films, I thought it would be suitable for me to do a review on the games’ third installment of the trilogy, “Return of the King”. Especially, since today is the opening of the long awaited finale of the trilogy. I would like to say that I really enjoyed the first two films, Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about the first game, Fellowship of the Ring. Honestly, I did not bother playing Fellowship of the Ring, because it did not look intriguing by any means. But I did have the opportunity to play Two Towers, which I really enjoyed. Now I have never been a big fan of hack and slash games, but I love LoTR.

Just like Two Towers, Return of the King begins where the last game/movie ended. You begin as Gandalf as he arrives just in time at Helms Deep. From there you are set on the journey that will lead up to the greatest battle of Middle Earth. Now, I really prefer not go into detail about the different levels, since the game follows the movie pretty accurately. Therefore, I don’t want to spoil anything for the folks who have not seen the movie. Now for the most part I will just talk about the usual, graphics, gameplay, sound, and AI.

EA made some improvements to the third installment, which made Return of the King a very satisfying title. From the beginning of the game I was hooked on the new story, graphics and sound. I was very pleased to see that you are able to play as Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, and three other unlockable characters. This is a change from its predecessor where you were only given the option of playing as Aragon, Legolas, or Gemli. Another new addition to Return of the King was the all new coop mode. This is always fun if you want someone else in the action too besides the computers AI. Speaking of the computers AI, depending on your difficulty settings the enemy AI is magnificent. If you are attacking, they will block and fight you with various moves. If you run, they will chase you and hack you up, and vice versa. But it’s rare that you will chase after your enemies considering that you will be in the middle of huge battles.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/rotk/ss03_thumb.jpg[/floatright]What I really enjoyed about playing RotK was that each character can be leveled up with experience points. After each level, you are given a certain amount of experience points depending on your performance in battle. These points are helpful in purchasing combo moves, special attacks, and increased health and power. Combos are best used during bosses and one on one combat. It seems that special moves are sometimes impossible to execute during huge battles. When executed properly, the combo moves are flawless. The controls are also quite simple, and very easy to learn within minutes. In addition to your melee attack, you are given ranged attacks to pick off far off foes. Depending on the character, the ranged weapons vary. You should also remember that depending on the character, each path is very different from the others. But all will obviously end up at the same place, The Black Gate.

Graphically, Return of the King is magnificent given it’s improvements from The Two Towers. The different locations are all very smooth, colorful, and detailed with very minimal pixelation. What really amazed me about the games graphics was the elaborate detail of the characters appearances. EA did a great job in designing the characters facial detail identically to the movies. This was not the only aspect that was improved on since The Two Towers. I believe that the sound was improved with a more intricate detail to sound effects. In every level that I was battling in, I could hear everything that was going on from close to long distance. All the sounds were very well recorded and the voice overs of all the actors were uniquely written for the game. I should also mention that the music used in Return of the King is the from the movie’s original score. Using the original score really added to the intensity of the game. An aspect that was used in The Two Towers was to see how the movie sequences transitioned into the games. That effect really engulfs you into the story and the game. EA does not stop there with the improvements. As you continue to new levels you unlock special features to the movie and the production of the game.

As the final game of the series, I was really impressed with the improvements of the game since The Two Towers. Every character had its unique moves and weapons which were all upgradeable and made it very fun to play every level of the game. The story makes the game what it is by a large margin. Yes the game has its flaws here and there, but it’s not something that would make this game lame. Being able to play as the ring bearer and the great wizard is cool enough. At the end of the day, Return of the King finishes the trilogy of the games with a big bang. I would have to say that LoTR: Return of the King, is one of the top hack and slash games I have ever played. This is most certainly a game that I recommend all to play. This is especially true if you’re a big fan of the movies.

The King Returns!!

December 16, 2003

Yeah boy!! LOTR:Return of the King will be opening tonight at midnight and unfortunately I will not be there. But I do have tickets to a showing tommorrow. I hope all you LOTR fans are gearing up for what is looking to be the best film of the trilogy. I’m sure Pickle or Snowcone will have a post up tonight or tommorrow talking about how much the movie kicked ass.

You know, you would expect that the gaming industry would release a slew of games right before Christmas, but no. It seems that I can’t find any good titles that are being released before next week. Oh well, I guess we have to wait until next year. Also Nvidia will be hosting a $30K Halo PC tournament in Dallas which starts today. At the tournament they will also feature games such as Battlefield: Vietnam, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Painkiller. Wish I could make it to win $30K, but unfortunately the tournament starts today and I just don’t have time. But if any of you Snackbarians end up in Dallas today make sure to enter and win.

CHICK GAMERS PRINCESS!!

December 10, 2003

Ok Folks…Pretzel here just to give you gamers a little bit of break from the real world. You know there are some things in life that are a huge mystery to me. One mystery that boggles my mind, is the lack of chick gamers in this world. I have only met two girls in the flesh that are true gamers. One, is Cone’s wife Dots and the other is Janice a girl we hired at EB Games. Now before I met Dots and Janice I thought that chick gamers would not be HOT at all. After pondering for quite some time on this epidemic of lacking HOT GAMER CHICKS, a bulb was lit. My television tube to be exact. And the most beautiful of all GAMER CHICKS IN THE WORLD appeared. X Play’s very own Morgan Webb. On behalf of Snackbar Games I want to give Morgan Webb THE HOT GAMER CHICK of THE MILLENIUM AWARD!! Morgan Webb is truly the most BEAUTIFUL GAMER PRINCESS of all time. In my eyes anyway. If you want to know who Morgan Webb is just click here.
