I would like to call myself an intermediate gamer. An Avid gamer lives and breathes video games of all platforms night and day with out hesitation. As for me I have been exposed to the world of gaming since the age of 5. I myself have liked all platforms of gaming especially now with the advancement of technology. I would have to say that gaming has evolved into a more massive industry especially with the world internet community at our disposal. Leaving me with the simple answer that as time goes on, the strides of gaming will only develop into a more advanced, and widely used form of entertainment in this world.

Being a member of Snackbar has really tested my knowledge of gaming and the such. I have been able to expose myself to readers, gamers, and many others who have been in the industry of gaming longer than I have. After hearing certain conversations and talking to several people at The Austin Gaming Expo, I learned that my knowledge of gaming was very minimal. But I realized that most of the people that I had overheard or encountered, were people who immerse themselves in the full world of gaming, and do nothing else in life. I can honestly say that I am not that kind of person. I enjoy gaming very much, but there is a limit to my enjoyment. I think for those of you who were there can understand what I am saying.

Recently I wanted to expand my world of gaming to that of the PC world. Not that I was getting tired of gaming on consoles, I just wanted to try something new. Mind you, I have no knowledge of PC’s and what makes a good PC for gaming. I myself am a Mac user and use Macs quite frequently to edit, and simply a Mac was my very first computer. I have no opinion whatsoever on which computer is superior, it’s an endless debate. Moving on, I then proceeded to call upon my good friend Cone. Cone, I would say, has a more extensive knowledge of PC’s and the computer world than I will ever have in my life time. For example, this is an excerpt from one of our conversations that we had when I was inquiring about building a PC.

5/16/03, 4:41 PM AIM Message with Cone
Cone: What was your question?
Pretzel: Oh yeah… give me a sec… what should I buy to start off with besides my case? Wait… there is no sound card!
Cone: It’s onboard bonehead!
Pretzel: On board what?
Cone: It’s on the Motherboard.

Now by the conversation we were having, I think you can tell my knowledge of PC’s is absolutely zero. Since then, Cone and I have talked about what specs makes a top notch gaming PC for gamer as myself. Let me just add that everything that I am about to list here is based upon my need and my pocket book. If you think that the components listed here suck, then EAT ME and take it up with Cone!! I will go down the line here and do the best I can to try and list the different components that are used to make a good gaming system. Cone with his supreme skills of gaming said it’s crucial to have the right components to have a kick ass PC. Cone gave me a basic run down on the things that I need to purchase so he can assemble it. Prices changed as time progressed; therefore I was able to buy better equipment. Here was the recipe Cone cooked up for a kick ass gaming PC.

  • Motherboard: Abit NF7-S
  • CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton
  • Ram: 512MB Crucial PC2700 DDR
  • Videocard: ATI RADEON 9600PRO 128M
  • HD: Western Digital 120GB WD1200JB 8MB-CACHE
  • CDRW: Lite On 52x24x52
  • Speakers: LOGITECH Z-340 3 PC
  • Router: LINKSYS BEFSR41 4 Port Router
  • Power Supply: Antec True480 480 Watts
  • Case: Radiation-Blue/White-Front USB Acrylic Blue Frost Face, Spider Side Window, Blue Cathode Light Kit
  • Fans: Vantec 80mm Fan, Coolermaster Blue LED Fan
  • Monitor: Sony E440 Black 19in CRT
  • Keyboard: Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard
  • Mouse: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer

It was maybe a few months until everything was bought and assembled. Cone being the genius that he is, tightened a few things and did a few cosmetic touch ups to the assembly. After testing the computer and running it to make sure things were operational, it was ready to go. I was eager to see what this machine could do after hearing Dr. Frankenstein (Cone) talk about how awesome the computer was. Before picking up my gaming machine, I went to the EB Games and ran to the PC section and bought BF 1942 and The Road to Rome. I am fairly new to the world of PC gaming, and to be honest with you it was quite intimidating. All my life I was used to using console controllers and now things were drastically different. So I was looking forward to learning how to use the keys and mouse at the same time to game. After installing BF 1942 and gaming for a few hours I was totally impressed with everything the computer did. The graphics were beautiful, and it was insanely fast. Using the keyboard for controlling got easier, and the PC just looks beautiful. I really got my money’s worth in this machine.

Since then I have been nothing but happy with my PC. I suggest to those of you who do not own a gaming PC to totally build one, or find someone with knowledge to build one for you. If you would like to see some pics of my PC go here. Again, I would like to thank Cone for doing a superb job on building a beautiful machine, and would also like to thank EB Games Huebner for hooking it up with BF 1942 and The Road to Rome. I am one happy gamer!! Here are the following places I purchased most of my gear from if you are interested. Pretzel out!!

Great big shout out to all you Snackbarians out there in the gaming land. I’m Pretzel and I will be guiding you through the WIR. Before I can give you a rewind on last weeks haps, let me give you quick spill on the drama around here. I have been super busy in trying to transition out of the department that I am currently working for and into another department at my job. Yes folks its true, Pretzel does have a job regardless of what you have heard from Soda and Pickle. You ask why I am telling you this. Well for the simple fact that I am really backed up with gaming at my pad. I mean, I have like three new PC games, one new PS2 game, and two new Xbox games that I have not gotten to yet. Its really frustrating folks not to be able to dedicate your time to gaming. Last week in midst of all the drama, I was able to stop by the EB Games here in Houston and buy Ghost Recon: Island Thunder. So far I have liked it a bit more than the last one. I will hopefully game on it a lot more so I can get a review out for you folks. To add to the horra, I have been harassed from some friends of mine here about getting Counter-Strike for the longest time. So finally I did. First off, if you know me, then you know that FPS is my favorite genre in the gaming world. I was promised that this game would be the most dominated FPS of all. It wasn’t! Not only did the graphics blow, but the game was giving me massive problems on my comp. It was big disappointment for me. Needless to say I returned it and got No One Lives Forever 2. Now that’s a fun FPS, I have not given it enough playing time, but the time I have spent on it has really impressed me a ton. That says a lot to me cause I still think the best FPS of all time is Halo. That’s enough about me, let me get to the news.

To start the week off Vivendi announced that it has signed a deal with graphics developer NDL to use their 3D graphics technology. The 3D graphics has already been used in several games such as Morrowind, Freedom Force and about 60 other Vivendi titles.
“LucasArts'” announced it will give those who pre-order Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, a bonus disc. The bonus disc will have tons of features, surprises, demos, and other cool stuff. The game will be released sometime next month, so expect it to be on the shelves for pre-order soon.

EA Games announced the release of A

Abso-fucking-unbelieveable! That’s the best word I can find to describe NCAA College Football 2004. It is now the Mecca of video game football; the standard to which every other football game shall be compared to. Very rarely do I preorder a game and this is one of those rare titles to hold that distinction. I’m pleased to say that not only did EA Sports not let me down; they blew my fucking socks off. In fact, this game is so huge that I brought Pretzel in to give you guys a second opinion.

With the 2004 sports season finally here, I was excited for this title release. I wanted to know what EA had in store for us this year in NCAA football. WOW was the wait worth all the hoopla! EA really thought the improvements through for this year’s title. The additions are freaking insane. Tons of teams, more college spirit and way better graphics. Back to you Soda.

Look Pretzel, just because I’m letting you do this review with me doesn’t mean I like you; so don’t be getting all “cheeky” with me. I do have to agree with you on the insane wow factor on all the new features they added. My personal favorite game mode is Dynasty Mode. There is no better feeling than taking a cupcake one star program and build them into a recruiting powerhouse. The Sports Illustrated covers are by far my favorite addition to the franchise mode. The first time I saw my star quarterback on the cover hyping up my team’s championship run I about pissed myself. It is so the greatest thing of all time. The increased in-depth recruiting process is incredible; the ability to try and talk underclassmen into coming back, everything is so great. There are enough additions to make one’s head explode.

Ok you know what Soda…never mind our readers want to know what I have to say about the game, not you. I really was into checking out all the teams and the different stadiums they added to the mix this year. It totally blew my mind that some of these schools I had never heard of made it into 04; for example, Furman Paladins or how about The Wofford Terriers. The list goes on in this game, plus the stadiums look totally awesome. With different camera angles and all kinds of new school spirit stuff going on…this game will just blow you away with NCAA action. Another thing that I really enjoyed about this years edition is the new intros. Way more intros from all different schools that are just hilarious. Soda wouldn’t know anything about that though. He has no school spirit out at his school; unlike him I supported my school by going to all the football games.

I have to agree with you that the stadiums look fantastic. As a matter of fact, everything looks fantastic. The new tackles added this year are far superior to last year’s version. One of the things that bothered me about last year’s graphics was that most of the tackles looked like the ball carrier was tripping instead of being hit. This year defenders will lunge to shove runners out of bounds, grab players by the shirt and spin them to the ground, and blindside quarterbacks with crushing blows that send their helmets flying. The running animations are fantastic as well, running the option never looked so good. It’s not really related to the graphics, but I must make mention of the play action. In past football games play action was pretty much useless, especially when playing against another person. Welcome to the new world of play action, your quarterback and running back will sell the play action perfectly most of the time leaving the defense vulnerable to the long bomb.

Yes the improvements on the tackling improved so much. I want to add that the rollouts were so much smoother this time around. Not to mention that the running and passing this year are so much more controlled with no delay at all. Last years edition would take forever for my guy to dive, or spin or whatever. This year everything is much more controlled and way smoother. Let me just add that the new plays are also just freaking killer this year. QB screens, WR double reverses, and way more trick plays. The colors are much more appealing and brighter this time around. The atmosphere in the stadiums and during game play is just wild. It totally just draws you into the college experience. EA really emphasized the play-by-play with an elaborate amount of new dialogue for every single play. I was really impressed with that factor in 04. Last year, they would just repeat themselves all the time. So most definitely this years announcing is much more advanced.

The crowds are i ntense, especially when you’re putting a hurting on a high ranked school at home and they start chanting “Over Rated.” This game is excellent is all aspects. Faithful Snackbar readers know that I am a sports game junky, and this would rank very high in my top five sports games of all time. So in conclusion; this game is a must purchase and Pretzel still sucks. Soda out.

I’m currently in the process of building my very own University. It won’t be long until it will be the most ruling, dominate school in the nation. I’m still working on my players and theirs ratings. Overall the 04’s game play is very entertaining and it very much sucks you into the whole college experience. I’m going out on a limb here to say that Soda is right about this game. It’s most excellent! This game is most definitely a must buy for your game collection; whether on PS2 or Xbox, NCAA 04 is where it’s at!

Bienvenidos to all you Snackbarians, the spinning bottle pointed in my direction this week. So don’t fret I am here to give you the skinny on whats been happening in the gaming world. Before we hit all the juicy stuff, let me just tell you that the staff here at Snackbar are gearing up for an exciting time. Were about two weeks away from AGE, the staff here has formulated a few ideas for the event so make sure you guys check it out. Also the guys have been working really hard with the site and some improvements so stay tuned for that as well. As for me, I am mixing up some ingredients for my very own feature, so you faithful readers make sure you look for that in the near future. For you peeps that are around the SA area make sure you continue to check out the forums, Cone and Wraith are always spearheading some really kick ass LAN parties so keep looking for the updates.

In PC news, Microsoft announced an expansion pack for the fantasy RPG, Dungeon Siege, the expansion pack will not be released until late this year. Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna will have all new characters, maps, campaigns, spells, weapons, and some other really cool additions. As you already know, Vivendi has announced the prequel to No One Lives Forever 2, which will be titled Contract J.A.C.K. The prequel will include an all new storyline and experience, but it should not disappoint NOLF lovers. The game will include online gameplay, new weapons, vehicles and all kinds of other cool stuff.

The official release date has not been announced yet but it should be released in late 2003. With so much other news this one really stands out for me, Rockstar has announced the sequel to Max Payne, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. To check out some news and updates check it out here. The official release will be sometime this autumn. EA has released a downloadable map for Battlefield 1942 entitled the Battle of Britain. With new weapons and massive aerial fighting this should be a rockin map. To download it go here. Along those lines, EA has announced Battlefield Vietnam. Its obvious that EA will be using the same engine from BF 1942 for BF Vietnam, but with a different storyline and time. The hype has been much for this awaited title, so keep looking for that in the future.

In console news, Xbox Live has released another new map for Return to Castle Wolfenstien: Tides of War. Activision and id Software will release the final map later this summer. With the final episode in the trilogy due out this November, EA is excited to release the anticipated title Lord of The Rings: Return of the King. EA has stated that it will be a lot more action packed with better visual graphics, and co-op game play. EA has said they have out done themselves from their previous title A

Being the FPS fan that I am, I had to get my hands on Soldier of Fortune 2 when it came out. The only thing that I had ever heard about SOF was the famous magazine, which bears the same name. Since I have not played the first SOF on PC, I was really excited to see what the next installment had to offer, especially since it was released on the Xbox.

Needless to say I look for several things in any FPS. There are different aspects in a FPS game that I look for. They are: graphics, weapons, AI, sound, and environmental destruction. I was eager to see what this game had to offer as an FPS compared to the recent release of other games in the same genre.

When the game begins you are playing the character of John Mullins, a respected combat veteran turned professional consultant. A private organization called “The Shop” contracts you for covert operations around the world to combat terrorism. The Shop has gathered intelligence that a worldwide terrorist group has developed a deadly virus, and is planning to spread the virus around the world without mercy. You have been called to eliminate the threat at all cost. The missions are in different environments such as jungles, urban locations, frozen tundra, deserts, and many more locations around the world. Each mission that you encounter is actually very long and drawn out. There are very few to zero objectives in each mission. The objectives can vary from rescuing a hostage, collecting intelligence, or just eliminating an entire army of terrorists. But 98% of the time you are just mowing people down. You literally have to destroy huge regimes of terrorists, which is actually quite funny. Honestly, the game is not very involved beyond eliminating mass numbers of terrorists. Because SOF fails to draw you into the game, the diversity of the game play does not go beyond massacring people and blowing things up. Just in case you get a little bored of slaughtering people in small numbers then you can up your difficulty in the settings menu, which by the way, will only increase the number of terrorists in a mission.

Activision, the creators of the SOF games, is known for helping gamers out during game play, for example in the earlier released hit Return to Castle Wolfenstein. In SOF’s case, hint icons will appear at certain times to inform you that you can operate or interact with an object. Right below your hint icons is your health and armor status bar, and on the bottom right of your screen is your weapon and ammo status bar. One thing I love about first person shooters is the amount of weapons you can carry at one time. SOF allows you to carry up to 10 weapons, and before each mission you can customize your arsenal to your likings. I personally enjoy playing any FPS that allows you to carry a weapon in each hand at one time. SOF gives you that freedom to carry two pistols, Uzi’s, or whatever else you can get your hands on. This aspect of the game really makes it a tad bit more fun.

The controls in SOF are very similar to the controls of RTCW. Your directional pad helps you scroll through your weapons and lean to peak around a corner. You also have a quick grenade button, just in case you feel like causing more damage. Basic movem
en
ts are done by using the toggle sticks forward, backward, and strafe, which can be inverted if you prefer. Both triggers are used to fire and zoom with scoped weapons. You have the option of changing the mode on certain weapons with the white button. For stealth purposes you can press down on the toggle buttons for crouching and proning. As a side note, stealth does not help you in any way, shape, or form in this game. You can also customize your controller to your personal preference of gaming. The responsiveness of your controller is very quick, sometimes reloading can be a pain but it’s done automatically when you forget.

This will then lead me to the games A.I. and its graphics. I have not been able to experience a FPS hat will allow me to continue to dismember a corpse once I have killed it. SOF will allow you to riddle the corpse with bullets or completely decapitate its head with your assault rifle. Very gruesome I might add. It’s fun to watch as you kill your enemy, and then proceed to see parts of his head come off as you shoot him at point blank range. And yes folks, blood will flow like a river in this game. Just to add a little bit more of knit-picking, all the characters wear the same outfits and they all look identical. This really annoys me because I believe that variety in a game is a must. It seems that the graphics engine used in this game was similar to that of RTCW. The games color is very cloudy and dark with very little detail given to the objects. The lighting effects in this game caused it many times to clip continuously, especially as I walked down a hall. Overall the lighting effects in this game are horrendous. Another quality of graphics and game play that I search for is environmental destruction. SOF
limits you to destroying several things in the environment, which I think is lame. The environment was also not smoothed out properly and not given enough detail.

As you get closer to walls and trees, they become exaggeratingly pixilated and lose even more detail. On the other hand, the weapons look absolutely realistic and very fine. Each weapon has its own slick style and finish that make it look very appealing.

SOF’s AI is not very satisfying at all. The enemy will run at you, screaming who knows what, with a huge cannon in their hands and once they are in point blank range they will crouch and proceed to fire at your knees. That’s just horrible AI in my book. After sniping an enemy from afar, another guy will run to the exact same spot where you sniped the last guy, only to meet the same fate. Thus killing about 10-15 guys in a matter of seconds. This process happens on every mission countless amounts of times – again the game’s AI is very annoying and very unsatisfying. It will take an enemy anywhere from 3-5 seconds to fire upon you once you have fired at them during a mission. It was obvious that Activision did not spend a lot of time on the game’s AI, maybe didn’t spend time on the game at all.

Double helix also fails to bring great sound effects to the mix. The music is rarely heard, the dialogue is extremely pointless and flat, while the ambient noise is dead. SOF was obviously not mastered properly and poorly mixed all around. Although, the only good aspect to the games sound is the weapons being fired. Every weapon being fired sounds like you are sitting next to a .50 caliber machine gun. I mean you literally have to turn down your television every time you shoot your weapon.

Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix failed to satisfy me overall wit

h a lack of involvement. Activision decided to rush into this game and leave out many elements of involvement including creativity, graphics, and a descent challenge. Since I have purchased SOF I have not seen a single soul on LIVE playing SOF. To make matters worse, the game is not multiplayer capable unless you system link. This then brings me to my conclusion; just stay away from the game, unless you are bored and have nothing else to play, but even still it will only add to your boredom. On the other hand, if you like first person shooters then by all means rent it and give a shot. Overall, I would have to say that SOF 2 was most certainly a big disappointment in my book.
