gaming news. Peace out!!!

Before I purchased SOCOM: U.S. NAVY SEALS I had read reviews from
both sides of the spectrum. The only game that I had played that
was similar to SOCOM was Ghost Recon on the Xbox, which I really
enjoyed playing. It wasn’t until a few months ago that I got the
guts to purchase SOCOM.

The game begins as you are dropped into enemy territory to eliminate
a terrorist compound. You will be leading two teams, Able Element
and Bravo Element. Your two teams are equipped with state of the
art covert weaponry and equipment. Depending on your mission your
teams are set up automatically to default with weather gear and
weapons gear. You are also allowed to customize your team with certain
weapons and gear if you feel comfortable with your skills. Once
you have finally equipped your team accordingly you are now ready
for deployment. Let me warn you ahead of time the combat management
for your team is quite difficult. In order to execute your mission
with a successful score you will need to learn how to follow every
order and give commands. The game scores you on performance of stealth,
time, teamwork, and special or regular objectives accomplished.
Every small detail matters in all your missions. Prior to deploying
you are briefed on your mission and the objectives. You are given
a map to study as well as specific points of attack and special
routes to take in your mission.

The controls in this game are far more complex than other combat
games I have played before. It took me quite a while to get used
to managing of both your teams along with yourself during a mission.
Your regular movements such as running forward and other directions
are executed by using the analogs sticks. Your directional pad is
used for zooming with your weapons, binoculars, night vision and
peeking around corners. While zooming you can also switch from third
person mode to first person mode. All your special actions like
busting out your weapon or cycling through them is done with the
L1 and L2 buttons. Changing body positions such as crouching, proning,
and standing are done by using the triangle button. You can also
customize your controller in the options menu to your personal likings.

The game screen helps you out tremendously during your missions.
The top right of your screen is a mini map spotting your location,
objectives, and danger zones. This mini map took me awhile to understand.
Icons pop up during mission play that give options to pick up a
body and hide it, pilfer a new weapon along with ammo, take someone
out from behind, and many other special moves. On the bottom of

your screen you will have the status of your team and their health.
So you’re asking your self…”What about the freaking headset?”
Well the headset is what SOCOM is known for. Using the headset in
this game makes executing commands a little easier for you. Now
if you don’t want to use your headset during single player mode,
that’s cool. You are still able to execute commands with just your
controller. By pressing the circle button a series of submenus appear
on your screen. First thing you need to do is give orders to someone,
Able or Bravo element. Next is what you need them to do, a series
of actions appear that you can choose. Finally, you will need them
to execute these actions at a certain location. On your map it gives
locations, and those locations are symbolized with letters of the
military alphabet. Your command screen will display the locations,
and once you have chosen your location, your team will move. In
order to use the headset effectively you have to say the correct
commands. You just can’t say something like “Move your ass
soldier and kill those commies!!” That just won’t work. Whatever
commands pop up on your submenus are the ones you have to say clearly.

Allow me to proceed on SOCOM’s AI and graphics. There are times
where the environments are a bit sluggish and some that are really
sharp. The missions in the mountains are sharp and with very little
visibility. Considering the amount of snow that is falling you will
not be able to see very far. Once you start zooming in on distant
objects things become pixilated. Rain forest missions are just real
nasty. The game does really good job dealing with the rain forest
environment. Dense fog, nasty ground and sluggish trees in the graphics
are pretty good. Although I still have a problem with visibility
in this game. The further you look the more pixilated the background
gets.

The AI in SOCOM is a little slow at times. Reaction time for your
team after an order has been given sometimes feels like years to
be executed. At times when storming a compound my partner will take
his sweet time pulling the trigger or reloading while I’m getting
shot up from every direction. Another example is when I am diffusing
a bomb, my partners will just sit there and switch weapons while
letting me get lit up with bullets. Many times have I given orders
to follow my lead, when I turn around they are still in the same
place where I started. Many times my teammate will block the only
exit out of a building while ten guys are blasting away at us. I
believe the AI in SOCOM is what effects the games overall performance.
Its many flaws in the AI category keep the smoothness of the action
from flowing.

SOCOM carries a well-detailed sound environment. Many of the different
missions are accentuated by the natural sounds that it provides.
You hear many sounds like your feet dragging through the snow, and

the mosquitoes and wildlife in the rain forest. The little details
that the sound provides in each mission give this game a real good
sense of reality.

Overall SOCOM is a great realistic military shooter. It has the
feel of Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon where stealth is a major factor.
If you don’t use stealth, you and your team will get slaughtered.
Using the headset for command execution brings an all-new flavor
to the military shooter genre. The levels are intense and elaborate
with something different to accomplish every time. SOCOM also has
a multiplayer mode only when using the network adapter for online
use. I personally have no desire to play this game online, the only
reason I bought this game was for the single player mode. If you
like games such as Ghost Recon and the such, then I suggest giving
SOCOM a try.

Serious Sam

April 29, 2003

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/serioussam/cover.jpg[/floatleft]Now I don’t know what you have heard about his game, but for twenty bucks this game is quite entertaining. Serious Sam was first introduced to me by The Wraith at EB. He had mentioned that his wife really was entertained with Serious Sam’s “Quake” like game play. With massive killing and very little plot, this seemed like a game that I should try out. It’s important that you know that I am the biggest FPS fan you will every meet, so needless to say you are probably going to read good things about this game…MAYBE!!

Once you pop the game into your Xbox it will seem that it may have a good story behind it. IT DOESN’T!!! Somehow the world has been taken over by freaky looking aliens and other extremely odd creatures and the only person that can save the world is none other than…yes you guessed it…Serious Sam!! Some how, Sam is then sent back in time to destroy the creatures, and also he needs to collect some elements that are similar to the ones in the movie “The Fifth Element”.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/serioussam/ss02_thumb.jpg[/floatright]I have put in close to ten hours playing Serious Sam and I have not beaten it yet. It usually takes me about that much time to beat a game. It is impossible for me to beat this game, the game continues on forever with no end. I’m sure this game has an end, but I haven’t seen it yet. Serious Sam is an all around shoot ’em up game. With tons of enemies and guns, the carnage never ends on every level. Each level is set up with certain weapons that are given to you, so that means that only certain types of creatures are after you. As you progress throughout the game, the creatures become more intense with insane numbers. If your worried about power ups or armor…don’t! Each level has an insane amount of armor, power ups, extra life, and ammo everywhere. What’s really hilarious about this game is that there is no pivotal point to the game except getting an insane amount of points. You can literally run through each level without shooting one round. Unfortunately, if you do that you won’t receive one point or extra bonus stuff. Every level is filled with secret passages, treasures, and extra weapons. Serious Sam can carry insane amount of weapons and ammo, that’s another thing that I really enjoyed about this game. While your running around blowing up psycho looking creatures, you can scroll through your list fifty or so weapons as the game progresses. Rocket launchers, miniguns, canons, sub-machine guns, flamethrowers, laser guns, the list keeps going. So if you’re worried about variety, don’t stress, this game has it. Another entertaining option about this game is its multiplayer. Mass chaos is also very fun with sixteen of your friends if your wanting to system link that is.

I have pretty much summarized the simplicity of the game by now. So you would think that if the game play is simple, the control scheme must be. The controls in Serious Sam are very user friendly with very little management and responsibility. You don’t have to worry about reloading, because it’s done automatically for you. Once you do run out of ammo for that particular weapon that you are using you are automatically switched to the next weapon with ammo in your arsenal. The only management on your controlling pad that you have to worry about is deciding what weapon you want to use. Strafing, running, and jumping are the basic movements on your toggle sticks.

Now comes the bad part of the game. I’m not planning on spending much time on explaining the graphics aspect of this game. Why you ask…because the graphics just plain suck on every level of the gaming spectrum. I mean there is not much to describe because it sucks so damn bad its not even funny. I laughed so hard when I saw them at first. However, I did not buy this game for the graphics. I bought this game for the sole purpose of running around and blasting things to death.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/serioussam/ss05_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]With that said I can move on the overall challenge of this game. This game is completely insane on normal difficulty. Serious Sam has about four different difficulty levels to choose from. Currently I am playing on normal, and the levels take me almost thirty minutes to an hour to complete because of the wicked battles that I encounter. Creatures just never stop respawning. More than anything you will need to play this game is stamina. Bosses at the end of the levels are easy to get through. Trust me, it will only take you one time to kill every boss; it just takes a long time.

There is really no point to out develop one aspect of the game if the other part sucks. The sound is no different than the graphics, they both suck, the sounds of the creatures are horrible, Sam’s dialogue is corny and cheesy, and the music sounds like it was ripped off the soundtrack of a porno. One thing I want to warn you about in this game, is the distant screaming that starts really low then gradually becomes louder and louder. That sound is the sound of “The Al-Qaeda suicide bombers”. They run around each level with their domes lopped off and with two bombs in their hands ready to explode when they are in close proximity to you.

For twenty dollars I think that Serious Sam is a very entertaining game if you’re into the cheap FPS genre. It’s simple, cheap, and fun. I suggest renting it if your not convinced to purchase it. However, its only twenty bucks and it seems like a never ending game with great possibilities for sleepless nights.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/nightfire/cover.jpg[/floatleft]While playing 007 Nightfire the only thing I can say about this game is that it is the most entertaining game I have ever played. Now what I mean by entertaining is that there are so many fun factors about this game that keep you on the edge of your seat. There are many games out today that are cool to play and are semi fun but this one really has so many different aspects in the mission mode that it’s just pure fun. Now because I am a FPS (first person shooter) fan this automatically makes my A-list, but oddly enough if this game was in a different category, I would still put it on my A-list as a fun game. Now before I begin to explain the different factors and aspects of this game, I will make it a point to not compare it to its predecessors N64’s Goldeneye and Playstation 2’s Agent Under Fire. Although we all enjoyed N64’s Goldeneye, lets give the next generation of Bond games a chance.

To begin, let’s talk about the game’s storyline and its gameplay. Of course it goes without saying you are an MI6 operative known as 007 James Bond. Phoenix International Corporation is helping the world in its destruction of nuclear warheads. Phoenix Int. Corp led by Raphael Drake, is known to have stolen some of the warheads and MI6 Intelligence has sent 007 to infiltrate Drake’s domain and gather intelligence. Along the way you meet many hot women spies, and encounter the obvious enemies that will try and stop you from your progress.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/nightfire/ss01_thumb.jpg[/floatright]As 007, you are given an insane amount of Q gadgets to work with throughout the length of your missions. For example you are given thermal imaging glasses, a zippo that turns into a micro camera, a palm pilot that’s also a decryptor, a cell phone that’s a grapple, a shaver that’s a grenade, the keys to your car give an electric stunner, and your watch is a laser. Not only do you get crazy gadgets, but you get some really deadly weapons to help you out on the missions. Your arsenal consists of your standard golden PP7 and other pistols, your sub-machine guns, laser guns, sniper rifles, grenade and rocket launchers, sentinels, and a crossbow. As far as explosives go, you can choose, flash grenades, smoke grenades, frag grenades, satchel charges, remote mines, and laser trip bombs. All weapons have modifications during the missions as well as during multiplayer mode. Let me take you on a detour here for a second. The multiplayer mode is really fun to play. Since this game is not Live enabled, or link play enabled, Nightfire is only limited to four players. There are several games that you can choose from, i.e. CTF, deathmatch, etc. Customizable weapons, bots, and mods are given to you as an extra bonus as well. Now back to weapon mods. You can switch from fully automatic to burst, or grenade launcher to rapid fire. All weapons have their own characteristics that make the options to this game very unique. Needless to say anywhere you go throughout the game, you will be massively packing. And finally, you are given the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish to roll in during mission mode. This bad boy is filled with massive Q gadgets that do some real damage on the road and under water as well.

Since I have just mentioned the serious amount of weaponry you will be carrying throughout the missions, you are probably wondering how you are going to manage your equipment and use it effectively. Well don’t fret, Nightfire has nine different controller set-ups, and a special self customizable set-up if you don’t like any of the games default settings. The control management in this game is very easy, slick, and extremely helpful. I personally cannot stand inverted controls; therefore I use the Goldeneye set-up for my controller. I found it very helpful to have your mod buttons be the white and black buttons, while your D-pad is used for you Q-gadgets and switching weapons. Your B button is also used to cycle through your weapons a little faster during a shootout. You have your standard reload, jump and crouch buttons, while your left trigger is for aiming and your right trigger is for shooting. Your D-pad is also used for zooming in while using sniper rifles and the such. Overall I find the controls in this game to be very flexible and extremely simple.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/nightfire/ss03_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]Nightfire’s AI seems to flow very smoothly throughout, given the games simplicity. Although stealth is not a major factor to complete the missions, it still gives you some sense of challenge. During mission mode on certain levels, it won’t matter if you come out guns blazing and shooting up the entire population. Every mission has its objectives, and each objective is automatically carried out in order. Only when it’s necessary for a mission you can blow out lights and other small details that could aid in your mission. Headshots are very effective but any other shots to the body seem just as effective. Some of the dialogue is repeated when encountering the enemy, at the same time their movements seem to be very limited on some levels. The enemy characters seem to be running within an invisible box when tracking you down. The graphics in Nightfire don’t seem to play an intricate role as it seems to me that many of the characteristics from N64’s Goldeneye and Agent Under Fire are very present in Nightfire. Shadows are cut and straight edged, along with many of the buildings and structures that surround you. Colors and scenery in all levels are very appealing. Considering the amount of traveling you’re going to be doing, you will discover the amount of change in color and depth. Unfortunately, the details of the characters faces and bodies are very rigid, squared, and edgy. The games cinematics are pretty entertaining, but the graphics are no different than game play.

This is where things start getting a little hairy. I was not pleased with the amount of annoying music this game has. Some of the music that is in this game just does not fit the environment and the game play what so ever. Sound was not a major factor in Nightfire’s agenda, and personally I was not impressed by the game’s sound at all.

I believe Nightfire is one of the most entertaining Bond games that I have played since N64’s Goldeneye. I love FPS and I love Bond, so playing this game was a total enjoyment for me. Many of the different aspects of this game were totally mind blowing, which made things a lot more interesting. If you love Bond games I think you will really enjoy this game. I would suggest everyone give this game a chance, if you’re not interested in buying it then at least rent it.

Yes folks the rumors are true, EA Games has released a slue of titles for the Medal of Honor series for all platforms. EA released the title of two games for the PC, MOH Allied Assault Expansion Pack 2, and MOH Pacific Assault both games have not been given a release date as of yet. Earlier this past Monday, EA announced the release of MOH Rising Sun due this coming fall for the Xbox, PS2, and GC. This game will take place in the pacific theater of World War II and will continue to its sequel in 2004.

EA reps expressed the desire to move on into the war to give players a wide range of diversity in game play. EA felt that it was time to move from the European Theater and move towards the Pacific for a different adventure. Rising Sun will have an enhanced multiplayer mode compared to its MOH Frontline multiplayer. Rising sun will have team play, deathmatch, and also cooperative play during the missions. EA is beginning Rising Sun with a pivotal point of the war. Instead of Omaha Beach like in Frontline, you will go through the invasion of Pearl Harbor. Marine Corporal Joe Griffin experiences the invasion of Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Singapore, Burma, and the Philippine Islands. You also begin the missions with your brother who you fight with side by side until battle separates the both of you. The search of your brother will take you to the sequel of Rising Sun. With new weapons, missions, cinematics, and game play, I am excited about what EA is going to do with the MOH series. Here are some of the rough screenshots and artwork developers displayed at the EA conference:
