Cold Fear

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/coldfear/cover.jpg[/floatleft]Survival-horror, you should know the genre by now. We have seen reams of them flood the consoles over the years, each trying to bring something new, most failing in the attempt. At first, we had scary pop-up moments that were trickled throughout the game. Then ambience made with sound and design. All of which gave the “been there done that” reaction from a lot of gamers. Cold Fear by Ubisoft is another survival-horror game, many times referred to as Resident Evil 4 on a boat. Now while I cannot say that is totally true, it does borrow many of the aspects that make RE4 so good. By aspects, I mean an attention to action. In the past, it was scattered action and lots of puzzle solving. Now it’s blow stuff up, unlock a door, blast more things, get scared, blow away what scared youA

Just got back in from Chicago, man that place rules. I have SOOOO much to catch up on, and so little time to do it, se la vi.

Since the PS2 hit shelves before the Cube and the Xbox it certainly had a jump on the competition. Not to mention a slew of third party titles to kick of a massive game library. Regardless of DRE’s, and the failed hard drive experiment the PS2 has now shipped 90 million units worldwide. Now that, is a lot of gaming going on right there. Of course you can attribute the latest surge in sales to the slimmer PS2, with the internet gaming capabilities already built in.

The next generation of consoles will be led by the Xbox 360, will they garner the same out of the gate success that Sony had?

Kanagawa prefecture has banned the sale of GTA III to minors. This is the first time a game has gotten this kind of treatment there. Get the details from Gamespot here.

On a personal note I am sick and tired of seeing minorities portrayed in this light. Although I am a Hispanic American, its unfortunate that games protray African American’s in such a terrible light. What happens when next gen hits and the action looks even more real, or when the generation of consoles after that hits homes and action looks incredibly real? Why do these games sell so much? Why is Snoop Dog, and 50 Cent (both whom I currently have in my I tunes) so eager to endorse a game where African Americans kill other African Americans. The game is not in a war setting, but in the suburb setting, where people live and to get respect you have to be hard.

I am all about freedom of expression of games, but developers need to take a bit more responibility now a days, and parents need to do their job and raise their children right. It is an endless argument, debate, whatever. I have no respect for Rockstar Games whatsoever, not because the game is violent, but because its a crap game ruled by shock value of shooting other people and doing what you want. Whatever.

Three Bills

Reports of the Xbox 360 (what a lame name) are out indicate that the console will be released in the three hundred dollar range. Many people were thinking prices could skyrocket to the five hundred range, so you can spend the extra money on whatever it is you kids do these days. Expect to have your wallets ready for Thanksgiving of this year, which if you think about it, is not to far away.
