Part of what really makes a game fun for me is an open-ended experience. Probably one of the reasons I play so many PC games is that, either by design or through modding, many games offer me this sort of thing, while console entries prefer to have a much more defined beginning, middle and end. When I was a kid, my little brother and I would spend hours building things out of Lego blocks, destroying those things, and then building other things. I built mostly space ships and he stuck to things like firetrucks and ambulances. It’s still an “I know this will never happen” dream of mine to be one of the guys at Lego who creates new sets. Loving Lego as I do, you’d think that my favorite game would be something like Minecraft. You’d be wrong though, my favorite is far less popular: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. I know it’s current (as is the rest of my list), but I can’t honestly think of a game that better encapsulates what I consider to be pure, unadulterated fun. READ MORE

I had been interested in the original Mega Man when I first saw it in an unofficial off-the-newsstand NES strategy guide, but the game didn’t sell very well and by the time my brother and I had our NES it was basically impossible to find, as this was aeons before GameStop – not to mention pre-owned games in general – were even a thing. I checked out the coverage on the sequel and could not have wanted it more. READ MORE

When thinking about my favorite game, I have to consider the many things I love about games. Yes, the gameplay is important, as is the presentation (especially the music), but I’ve come to realize that I really appreciate when a game attempts to tell a story and succeeds at it. When you think of Metal Gear Solid, “good” or even “cohesive” narrative may not come to mind at first, but when the original game came out I was absolutely inspired. Fast forward to 2008 and the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and you had a game that completely blew my mind from beginning to end. READ MORE
