In this installment of the Speculator, we discuss a game falling prey to publisher cancellation whims, another Dreamcast favorite getting a new paint job and a series reboot refreshing a long-tired Ubisoft series.
Next Splinter Cell game to be a series reboot
Ubisoft is working on the next entry in the Splinter Cell series, but thanks to comments made by the head of the studio working on it, it sounds like the series may reboot to a more action-oriented title.
Andrew 70% Conviction sold fairly well and was (mostly) well-received, but it seemed to lose a lot of what attracted people to the series in the first place. I do know that a team at Ubisoft is working on the next game in the series. I would like to think they’ll find a way to restart everything to bring back old fans and also possibly attract new ones. |
Shawn 35% I could see this going either way, really. Sam Fisher is getting pretty old, so they either need to do a reboot or introduce a new main character soon. Whether this will be the entry that does it though, I don’t know. I’m going to lean toward Sam having one more adventure left in him. |
|
Graham 60% As much as Conviction was a solid release in the series, I don’t think anyone was particularly tied to the world and aesthetic of it. Going back to a new young-Sam with a look more reminiscent of the series’ early days? That’d be nice. |
Eric 45% There’s a possibility this will happen, but not extremely likely. Devil May Cry had a nice four-game run before they decided to reboot it. The odd thing was, Dante was still extremely popular. People love Sam Fisher, but the last game didn’t really live up to the hype they had hoped for. I mean, they could do one, they don’t need to do one, but it could happen. |
Prey 2 to be canceled
Prey 2 has been completely absent from view ever since E3 last year, with a planned GDC appearance being canceled shortly before the show started. Thanks to new rumors this week, it sounds like the reason for that cancellation may be that the game itself is on the verge of being canceled.
Andrew 65% This one pains me. Prey 2 seemed like it has such potential to be really great, but we haven’t heard a single thing about it since last E3. There was going to be a talk about it at GDC, but that never happened either. I want to remain optimistic about this one and hoping they just plan on pushing it back instead of outright canceling it (like 2K did with XCOM). At the same time, it being canceled wouldn’t surprise me too much at this point. |
Shawn 70% The little bit we’ve seen of Prey 2 looked very promising, so if it truly is canceled, I’ll be disappointed. Not at all surprised though. Games that go almost an entire year with no new information or trailers tend to get canceled, no matter how the franchise. And it isn’t like the Prey franchise is that large a franchise. |
|
Graham 45% The game industry is just plain ludicrous. I’m not sure I understood that so completely as I do now, having seen and played practically-finished games, only to see them canceled 98% of the way into development. Prey 2 looked feature-complete and visually polished last summer, so why cancel it after all that work is done? But like I said, the game industry is just plain ludicrous. |
Eric 85% To be honest, I forgot this game was being developed until the cancellation rumors popped up. With nothing being heard about the game for some time now, it seems like a very likely direction to be going in. |
Shenmue HD Collection headed to XBLA and PSN in 2012
Sega has released a number of high-profile Dreamcast titles on the various downloadable services for some time now, with the notable exception of the Shenmue series. Rumors are starting to pop up that Shenmue and Shenmue 2 have already been updated with HD graphics and a release is simply awaiting a good time.
Andrew 90% Sega is on a roll with digital re-releases of their classic Dreamcast games lately. We’ve already gotten a handful and we’re getting another this summer. The Shenmue games have a huge fan base still (the same ones that seem convinced we’ll see Shenmue 3 someday), so it seems inevitable at this point. |
Shawn 80% So, I’ve never played Shenmue, or even seen it in action. I know, I know, you’re all shocked by this. However, if this happens, I promise I’ll check them out. Oh, do I think it’ll happen? Yeah, probably. Why would Sega not re-release games that are guaranteed to sell well? |
|
Graham 65% I hope this happens. Sega’s been sitting on Shenmue a while, though, and the “Dreamcast’s Back” initiative resulted in four games, a bunch of silence and then a JGR announcement a few weeks ago. I could see this getting pushed to Q1 2013, or remaining in Sega’s back pocket. |
Eric 45% I’m actually crossing my fingers this one will happen. Sega has been doing pretty well with re-releasing HD versions of their more popular titles. With Jet Grind Radio gracing our systems in due time, I could imagine this one will cross our path again sometime in the future. I could then inquire about those men over there being sailors and having fun with Space Harrier in the arcade. |
