3DS Hands-on: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

February 1, 2011

Let’s be honest: if you haven’t played Ocarina of Time yet, it’s because you don’t want to. So we’re not going to waste time talking about the original gameplay and we’ll focus on how things have changed.

Let’s just go down the list: the 3D? Yeah, it looks good. The game seems to have some higher-resolution textures for things, and with the small screen it looks better than the N64 one ever did. It’s not really helpful to the gameplay, but it’s there.

How about the touch screen? It moves all the information down to the bottom screen, so things aren’t so crowded at the top, and items and maps are put there for easy navigation and to compensate for fewer buttons.

And the motion controls? Yeah, there are motion controls. You can hold the system up and aim the slingshot by moving around. You can even combine doing this with just moving the circle pad. Or you can stay still and look like less of a doofus. Your call, really, but all of them work fine.

Oh, and is it still Zelda? Yeah, I mean, it has Link and the Deku Tree and all those shenanigans. Really, they tried not to meddle too much, and that’s for the better. It’s not a launch window title, but what we saw is polished enough that we think it’ll be out before the holidays.
