This year’s presentation from EA was largely stocked with early ideas, promising titles with a long development cycle ahead of them. Still, though, there were some deeper looks at games like Dragon Age and Battlefield as well as first glimpses of Mass Effect, Battlefront and Mirror’s Edge.

The company is preparing for the launch of Dragon Age: Inquisition, and took the opportunity to show off the environments and combat of the game with new trailers. There’s a new, optional emphasis on tactics in the new game, allowing players to stop time and direct the party if that’s how they’d like to play. The game launches October 7.

After leaking a couple of weeks ago, Battlefield Hardline, a cops-vs.-robbers take on the main Battlefield formula, was officially unveiled. The demo was a 32-player multiplayer match featuring a brand new mode, Heist. The gameplay was identifiably Battlefield in nature, complete with destructible environments, but with a greater focus on battles in large city environments and police chases. The closed PC and PS4 beta was launched today. It’s scheduled to release October 21.

We were given a look at the development of the new Star Wars: Battlefront, in progress at DICE. Little information was shared other than some early in-engine footage of famous locations, but more is promised next year.

DICE is also working on the new Mirror’s Edge, and early work has been done to refine and retain the look of Faith, the game’s protagonist. Even more traversal options are being built atop the first game’s suite, letting players experiment with new paths.

Another early view was given of the next Mass Effect game. The focus on scale and exploration was emphasized in the new game, which is still a while off. Also mentioned was a new BioWare project, but this original IP is not quite ready to be announced.

Other news from the event:

Criterion’s next game, still unnamed, was announced, complete with ATVs, helicopters, jet-skis and other assorted vehicles. It seems to feature an open world and the ability to hop in and out of vehicles at any time. No other information was provided, but we’ll be hearing more about it later this year.

EA is finally dropping Tiger Woods from its golf franchise, releasing EA Sports PGA Tour in its Frostbite engine and focusing on larger-than-life “golf without limits” gameplay. Apparently you can hit a golf ball over a battleship.

The Sims 4 focuses mostly on new ways to customize your Sims, giving you even more control over their personality and desires. The focus on Sim emotions is the key differentiator between it and the older games. The game launches with the Sim Gallery, a website that allows you to bring in Sims and other creations from anyone connected to the service.

Also shown at EA’s briefing: EA Sports UFC (featuring martial arts legend Bruce Lee and launching next week), NHL 15 (with enhanced physics modeling), Madden 15 (with defensive camera angles and tackle cones) and Dawngate (the company’s foray into MOBAs).
