HD-DVD to launch with NO movies

March 14, 2006

I know we’re a games site, but we all want to keep track of the next-gen format war considering how closely it is tied into the next-gen gaming systems.

Arstechnica is reporting that the only surefire backer of HD-DVD has delayed the release of their first few videos. This means Toshiba HD-DVDs will be hitting the shelves with nothing to play on them! I’m a hardcore early adopter, but I’m already a little hesitant to choose between the two formats early, and even I’m not crazy enough to buy something that doesn’t actually do anything yet. Arstechnica points out that they will still have a lead over Blu-Ray and support from Microsoft, but we know MS will switch sides if this thing falters too much. Besides, we all know how well console add-ons do in the market. Certainly nothing is etched in stone for either side yet, but this is a huge blunder to start out with.
