Preview: Solatorobo hunting DS owners’ wallets this fall

July 20, 2011

It’s been almost twelve years since we saw an entry in the Little Tail Bronx series. With CyberConnect2’s original Tail Concerto being lost in the mix of .hack// and Naruto Ultimate Ninja games over time, a spiritual successor to the game finally came out last October in Japan: Solatorobo: Red the Hunter. It looked like the game may not see an American release, but XSEED stepped in and picked up the title.

The game drops you straight into the action. Controlling Red Savarin and his machine, DAHAK, you’re asked to retrieve a confidential file upon an enemy ship called the Hindenburg. In standard action-RPG style, the game has you moving crates around to figure out puzzles, countering missile attacks in battle, and defending yourself.

The art style has quite the charm to it as well. While the whole anthropomorphic-animal direction might turn some people off, you’d be hard-pressed to say that the game isn’t well-animated or skillfully-drawn. With the characters you meet, each character boasts a unique looks that really matches them to their personality, such as Red’s wild and adventurous demeanor, or his sister Chocolat’s charm and supportive nature.

With fairly simple controls and a colorful cast, the game shapes itself up to be an exciting entry in the Nintendo DS library. Solatorobo: Red the Hunter is set to be released sometime in September.
