Ace Team has carved out a niche for itself, both as a South American developer and as a company not afraid to see an idea through to its conclusion. Zeno Clash II, the sequel to its first release, is no exception. With the industry often choosing to play it safe and follow established genres, it’s nice to play a game that isn’t scared to make those crazy ideas that pop up during brainstorming sessions become reality. Injustice is exciting; it’s one of those games that a lot of people are hyped up for, but also one they weren’t sure they wanted or thought would even happen before it did. One would think that after the historic tragedy of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, DC Comics would have been spooked and snatched away its license before you could say, “get over here!” Nevertheless, here it is! It’s a thing, you can buy it, and even play it. Here’s the kicker: it’s actually pretty good! Unfortunately, this is a NetherRealm game, and it’s still running on the usual Mortal Kombat framework. Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is strange; there’s no getting around that. It’s a game that takes place in a world called Gamindustri where there are goddesses that correlate to each of the big three current video game consoles, and these goddesses look and act like anime teenagers. That’s usually a downside for me, but Victory admits its decision was a conscious one, owns it, and is able to use the visual style in concert with the writing to deliver some genuine laughs. And regardless of veneer, the reason that I play JRPGs is present in full force here: the battle system is fantastic. READ MORE
I like golf. It’s a sport that virtually anybody can become good at, and the camaraderie that comes from walking with friends for a few hours while competing for longest short and best hole every weekend is one of my favorite childhood memories. And that’s why computer and console golf has always held a special place for me: not only is it the rare sports game that I understand, but the attached nostalgia makes every round a fun one. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 is the most complete golf game I’ve ever played. From the excellent swing mechanics, to the variety of courses, to the great excellent online offerings, I was pleased at every turn with the experience. READ MORE
There are some games that have come along this console generation that will stand the test of time. They will be fondly remembered and analyzed for years to come, even with some flaws. The number of titles that meet this criteria are not large in number, but they come around just often enough and help people realize why they love games in the first place. The original BioShock is the perfect example of this, setting the groundwork for a potential franchise and becoming one of the most revered games in the past several years.
Irrational Games’ follow-up, BioShock Infinite, doesn’t just live up to that legend. It surpasses it.
