It’s no secret that Telltale knocked it out of the park with last year’s The Walking Dead. What is surprising is that the format works so well when Clementine, everybody’s favorite walking conscience, is removed from the equation. Just like The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us is based on a series of comic books. This time it’s Fables, and aside from the lovely comic book aesthetic, the two games are completely separate beasts. Marlow Briggs is the interactive version of the cheesy action movies I loved in the early ’90s, like Demolition Man. Things blow up, not because the plot calls for it, but because it sure would be fun to slow down the camera and watch a thing explode. There are guys with flamethrowers, not because they would be useful at an archaeological dig site, but because carrying a bunch of flamethrower fuel means they’ll blow up very nicely. These are the sorts of design choices ZootFly has made, and I love them for it. READ MORE

Few series have new releases as highly anticipated as Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise. A lot has happened since the last GTA game, including newcomers to the open-world genre and former competitors that have gone off in their own directions. Grand Theft Auto V, however, is out to demonstrate how sticking to and expanding on an already proven formula can work.

The console version of Diablo III isn’t nearly as pretty as its PC counterpart. It hangs up sometimes when you use some of the more complicated skills. Inventory management is a bit clumsy, and some of controls are weird.

Yet, after a few hours with it, I have no interest in revisiting the PC version ever again. READ MORE

Before even starting Killer is Dead, the splash screen displays an illustration of protagonist Mondo Zappa shrouded in shadow, holding the sharp side of his sword up to a woman’s neck. Her eyes are rolled back in ecstasy; she finds pleasure in being preyed upon. This image exemplifies the tone of Killer is Dead: it is dark, violent and sexual, more often together than separate.
