[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/armedanddangerous/cover.jpg[/floatleft]Armed and Dangerous is the story of 4 unlikely thieves that attempt to pull of the biggest heist of all time. They plan on stealing the fabled Book of Rule in the midst of a grueling war. Roman, the character you play as, has formed this band of thieves called the Lionhearts. The Lionhearts are made up of Roman, the criminal mastermind, Jonesy, a Scottish mole miner with a knack for demolitions, Q1-11, a former killer robot in King Forge’s army turned aware by his love for tea, and Rexus, Roman’s foster father as well as doctor, sorcerer, seer, and sage. You have to command this band of misfits through grunts, goliaths, monks, giant war machines and a dastardly army of psycho robots.

As you play through the game, you will feel more like you are watching the newest Monty Python movie than actually playing a video game. The cut scenes have an over the top humor and carry the plot along nicely. My favorite scene is the French Solider scene.

Armed and Dangerous is billed as a 3rd person action game, but it’s really a 3rd person shooter and possibly even a squad based shooter since you can issue commands to the other members of the Lionhearts. It took me a few minutes to get used to the controls and I had to play the first level a few times before I could shoot anyone without having to stand still and carefully aim. Once I got used to it, it was bullet blazing mayhem. They say “Victory is yours in 12,000 bullets or less”, but since A&D thrives off the chaos of battle, I am not so sure I would use less than 12,000 bullets in this game.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/armedanddangerous/ss02_thumb.jpg[/floatright]The variety of weapons and bombs really add a sense of variety to your destructive missions. The word variety was really redefined in this game when it comes to the weapons. I don’t mean you have your standard fare military grade weapons either. You have wonderful guns like the Topsy Turvy Gun which turns the world upside down causing your enemies to fall into space and then fall to the ground with a nice thud. Another favorite is the Shark Gun which shoots out a baby shark who then grows to full size and gobbles up your enemies whole. You can’t forget the World’s Smallest Black Whole which you throw on the ground and watch your enemies get sucked into. There are also available power ups that you can pick up throughout the levels that make these outlandish weapons even more out of this world.

You will battle your way through 5 levels that are each packed with 4-5 missions. The levels don’t always follow a strictly linear path either. In some levels there are alternate paths to achieve the goal for that mission which creates a less lineal and structured feel. I think having less structured plots makes gameplay a lot more enjoyable.

Armed and Dangerous does sport a full Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack so those of you with well equipped sound systems will enjoy every last bullet and explosion as you bring down the house.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/armedanddangerous/ss05_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]Unfortunately Armed and Dangerous doesn’t support any High Def resolutions like 720p, but since most people are still lacking HDTVs, I don’t think HD resolutions are a deal breaker just yet.

Armed and Dangerous is also Live enabled and has just recently had its first bonus mission released for download. The ability to get new missions from Xbox Live adds immense replay value to an already fun game.

Armed and Dangerous is a great 3rd person shooter that keeps the action hot and the humor on full tilt. Anyone looking to find a Brute Force style shooter (with improved gameplay) crossed with Monty Python and the Heist of the Book of Rule (yes I made that up) then A&D will surely be for you. Excellent work by Planet Moon and Lucasarts for delivering a solid title and at only $29.99 this title is a real steal.

Fuzion Frenzy

May 10, 2004

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/fuzionfrenzy/cover.jpg[/floatleft]I am fully aware that Fuzion Frenzy was a launch title for the Xbox and everyone under the sun has either seen or played FF, I just made it around to picking this game up. For the few of you out there that may be new to the Xbox, Fuzion Frenzy is a party game much like Kung Fu Chaos or Super Smash Bros. Instead of a four player fighting game, Fuzion Frenzy is centered around a whole slew of different minigames. To try and describe all of the different games would take an entire page.

Fuzion Frenzy has 4 different characters with unique traits. Each player selects one character and then you select one of the games from the vast list. While the game is loading you are given a short summary of the goals of this game as well as a summary of what buttons do what. Typically you only use A and B since most of the games are very simple.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/fuzionfrenzy/ss05_thumb.jpg[/floatright]At the end of each game, points are awarded in order of rank and you select the next game. Not much fun? Yeah well, when you get some friends over it becomes a ton of fun. Party games typically don’t have a huge single player experience and I don’t think Fuzion Frenzy breaks that pattern, but it could be fun for some short gaming sessions in between chores by yourself. The addition of CPU controlled players to fill any remaining spots makes this possible.

Fuzion Frenzy may lack a solid single player experience, but in the land of party games where the moto is short, fast, and fun it packs a real punch. Fuzion Frenzy delivers a simple game experience with enough variety to satisfy even the pickiest gamer.

The tournament mode of Fuzion Frenzy randomly selects a set of games from the 45 available games. The tournaments can consist of 8, 12, or 24 games with every 4th game being the Fuzion Frenzy game where players are able to “bet” orbs based on the number of points they have at that point in the tournament. They then battle it out with the other players in an attempt to collect all their orbs and steal orbs away from the other players. While it may be less than thrilling to play 2 to 4 times in a tournament, it is definitely a good way to catch up in points if you seem to be trailing behind.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/fuzionfrenzy/ss12_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]Fuzion Frenzy is a Platinum Hit so it weighs in at a hefty $19.99, hardly a strain on the wallet. I wouldn’t say that Fuzion Frenzy is a must own, but if you frequently have guests over and need something to keep everyone busy for a while it is worth the bargain price. Don’t expect to play Fuzion Frenzy with any regularity, but it is definitely one of those games you want to have around just in case the mood of a party switches to fast paced mini game action.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/thug/cover.jpg[/floatleft]It seems that with any series that lasts more than about 2 games, the game concepts get stale and the developer has to put a tremendous amount of effort into the next release just so that the reaction to a game is positive. How does that principle work considering the Tony Hawk series is now on its 5th or 6th (depending on if you count 2X or not) game in the series? Quite well actually. Aside from casual playing, I was introduced to the series with THPS4 on the Xbox. I felt that 4 was a very solid release and I was very weary of what Neversoft and Activision could add to Underground to make it worthy of my time and money.

The big addition to THPS2 was the use of the manual and its ability to help you link together long strings of tricks into insane combos. TH3 added the revert so you could make combos while on a half or quarter pipe. The new “revelation” in Underground is the ability to jump off your board, run for a moment, then remount your board and still continue the same combo. While I can see the advantage to this addition, it won’t be as revolutionary as the manual was to the overall game experience. The reason for this is because it’s extraordinarily difficult to control your character while not on board. This feature has its time and place, but don’t expect to use it all the time.

The rest of THUG feels and plays just like 4 did with the exception of a few changes in gameplay. Career mode from 4 was replaced by a story mode in THUG, which is actually a lot nicer. Instead of just selecting random tasks to complete, there is a nice little story that goes along with what you are doing and it made the game more enjoyable.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/thug/ss02_thumb.jpg[/floatright]Still present is the ability to create your own skater with a wide variety of appearances and accessories that help make your skater “unique”. Unlockable secrets and cheats made the cut as well. Most of those features have become standard fare for the Tony Hawk series.

A few new things you will notice are the ability to create your own tricks as well as to put your face in the game (only in the PS2 version of the game). You can find instructions about how to put your face in the game on the THUG [url=www.thugonline.com]website[/url]. The “create a trick” portion of the game was super easy and made for some interesting fun trying to create the wackiest looking tricks on the planet. I think this is the part of the game that I mentioned in the beginning of the review about having to put a lot of effort into new concepts to keep the game fresh.

It was sad that THUG was not live enabled as THUG would have been a nice addition to the Xbox Live family, but PS2 owners do have the option of playing online where Xbox and GC owners are not as fortunate.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/thug/ss13_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]All in all THUG is THPS4 with new levels, more options, and the same great soundtrack. While I certainly haven’t played THUG as much as I did THPS4, I would say THUG certainly delivered as the next game in the Tony Hawk series. If you are still enjoying TH4, there is no need to rush out and pick up THUG as the games are so similar, but if you are dying for some new content and the Tony Hawk games are your thing, then THUG is for you.

Counter-Strike

April 27, 2004

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/counterstrike/cover.jpg[/floatleft]It’s always interesting to see how a game does when it is ported from PC to console. Sometimes it fails and sometimes it does really well, it just depends how well the game stands up to its flaws. In the case of Counter-Strike (CS) for the Xbox, it had both positive and negative aspects to balance it out. Most gamers will frown upon the idea of making a popular FPS PC game into a console game. Why you ask? Everyone knows that FPS games are historically much better on PC than on a console. The use of a keyboard and mouse lends itself to better controls, graphics, online multiplayer, and sound are all aspects that seem to be superior in most cases on a PC than a console. CS had these aspects going for it until “PC GAMER” came along and ruined it for everyone. This and some other reasons are why CS for Xbox is a much better played on console than PC.

Dissecting CS is not all that hard if you think about it. The PC version, which is about four years old, was a mod for Half-Life’s online multiplayer. The mod brought new weapons, gameplay, and maps to the Sci-Fi dominated FPS world at the time. CS is a game that is played with two opposing teams, The Terrorist and The Counter Terrorist (CT’s). The game has two multiplayer modes, demolition and hostage rescue. The terrorists prevent the CT’s from breaching their compound and rescuing the hostages by taking them to an extraction point in hostage rescue. Demolition splits the CT’s to defend two sites from being bombed by the terrorists. The terrorists have a designated bomb holder that must plant the bomb at a certain location. Once it’s in place, you must prevent the CT’s from breaching the area to diffuse the bomb. Counter Strike has long been a favorite game of everyone’s favorite, PC GAMER. The Xbox version of Counter-Strike has had a face lift in graphics, new maps, and an effective ANTI-PC GAMER LOCK. You are probably asking yourself “What is he talking about PC GAMER? What does that mean?” I will to get that shortly folks, I need to get some of the other things out of the way first.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/counterstrike/ss03_thumb.jpg[/floatright]Being an original CS PC gamer, I was eager to get my hands on the Xbox version of this game. Hearing that new maps and a new single player mode would be added, I was anticipating its release. There are seven new maps that are included with the original seven that were ported from the PC version. The weapons and the method of purchasing the weapons has not changed a bit from its PC counterpart. The more people you kill, if you diffuse a bomb, if you detonate a bomb, if you rescue a hostage all result in gaining additional cash for better weapons.

A feature that they decided to add to the Xbox version of CS, was the online multiplayer mode through Xbox Live. This game is all about the online multiplayer by a large margin. Through Xbox Live, this makes CS un-hackable when playing with others online. Unlike its predecessor, there are no cheat codes or mods that you can input to get one headshot kills, walking through walls, god mode or any of the other numerous hacks available for the original game. Playing the PC version was one of the most frustrating experiences on earth. Many PC GAMERS would hack CS and make others playing experiences miserable. PC GAMER is the person who sits at home and plays countless hours of CS or any other game under the sun, using cheat codes, and ruining other gamers experiences. The Xbox version prevents people from having a miserable time playing CS.

If you are new to the CS world, don’t fret. The single player mode will allow you to get adapted to the world of CS. You can customize the difficulty and the number of bots you want to play against. Playing CS is quite fun and the controls are very easy to learn. Try not to compare CS to that of Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, or even Ghost Recon. CS is a shoot em up game that is fast paced and fun. Stealth is not a factor in this game, but execution and team work are big factors in this game. The more teamwork, the more exciting and enjoyable the game gets.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/counterstrike/ss05_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]For you FPS shoot’em up fans, this game would most definitely suit your needs. CS provides a fast paced game with an enjoyable online multiplayer. CS still stays true to its roots and succeeds to bring great FPS action to the Xbox. With Xbox Live, CS has made it expandable for downloading new maps and additional content. Overall, Counter-Strike delivers great multiplayer gaming with exciting fast paced run and gun. This is a title that must be in your FPS library for you run and gun fans, my suggestion is to “GO, GO, GO!!” To your nearest EB Games and get your copy. “ROGER THAT!!”

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/princeofpersia/cover.jpg[/floatleft]Price of Persia has been out quite some time now and it saddens me that I haven’t been able to fully focus a large chunk of time on this game. If I had to summarize this entire review in a single word it would be “Wow”. PoP is THAT good. PoP has undergone many revisions from its days back on the PC long before many of you were playing games to the Genesis, SNES, the Game Boy Color, and finally to the Xbox. Having never played any of the previous versions, I can’t tell you how true to the original the newest version is, but what I can tell you is that it is a game everyone should have as a part of their library.

If I get off track and starting ranting about how great this game is, you will have to forgive me because it is one of the rare titles that will blow away any expectations you may have about the game. From my perspective, Ubi Soft really shows that a simple mixture of some excellently prepared elements can produce a game beyond its time. Let me explain those elements to you now.

When you first start playing PoP, you will no doubt have to lift your jaw off the floor because the graphics engine is beyond description. The light and airy feel of the surrounding environments lends itself well to the fantasy world that has been constructed. These environments seem to be perfectly rendered with immense detail that doesn’t diminish with camera movements. There is no doubt in my mind that PoP is the most beautiful game that I have seen to date.

[floatright]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/princeofpersia/ss03_thumb.jpg[/floatright]To compliment the graphical perfection of Pop, Ubi Soft decided to mix in a set of controls that must have been divinely inspired. Every button seems to have been intuitively designed w/ gameplay in mind. Everything from performing wall runs to scaling a wall and ending in a backflip off of a carefully placed bar were performed with ease. The controls end themselves nicely to performing wonderfully acrobatic fighting moves of many varieties.

The combat system is another thing that was flawless in its execution. The way the Prince transitions from attack to attack really added a sense of realism to the fighting. It was about the closest thing to a completely liquid fighting system that I can recall seeing in a game to date.

The thing that really makes this game unique is your ability to rewind time should you fall and die or get yourself in a tough situation while fighting some enemies. Simply pulling the left trigger will rewind time for as long as you hold down the trigger until the meter runs out. The way this works is you have a meter in the top left of the screen. As you kill enemies, you use your dagger to capture the sand “in” them and in various places throughout the levels. This sand fills up the meter and when full, results in the ability to rewind time. You can fill up the meter multiple times before it is full so you can rewind a few times before a full refill is needed. Your meter increases in size as the game goes on. Above this initial meter is a smaller meter that determines how long you may rewind time. Hold the trigger down and time rewinds as the meter goes down. Let go of the trigger and the meter starts to fill back up. Very simple. The way you capture the sand is luidly integrated as a move in the combat system.

You are also able to use your dagger as a weapon. The dagger contains special powers that make fighting a large number of enemies a little easier. The dagger can slow down time and even freeze an enemy in stone for easy disposal. Additional powers are unlocked as the game progresses.

[floatleft]http://www.snackbar-games.com/images/reviews/princeofpersia/ss06_thumb.jpg[/floatleft]To make the game a little bit easier, you are given very frequent save points which you should utilize. There was more than one occasion where I had to go back to a previous save point and redo a small chunk of the level because I was almost dead at a very unfortunate place. These save points are also the places where you are given hints on how to complete the next portion of the level in the form of a “vision”. The visions show you enough of the next section so that you can figure out the room, but not enough that you feel like you are using a strategy guide.

Overall, I was pretty surprised that Ubi was able to create a superb blend of jaw dropping graphics and wonderful gameplay. Typically, one is sacrificed for the other and rarely do we get a game that is so fantastic in both areas. In addition to that feat, they managed to keep the controls simple and functional which creates a wonderful gaming experience.

Prince of Persia is not only one of the best looking games out on the Xbox, but it is a real enjoyment to play. I think I have said all that I need to say about the game so far. I do want to mention that the game is a tad bit short so if that makes you a little nervous you may want to rent it. From there you can make up your mind if it belongs in your library or not after you spend some time with it.
